Ladies shavers: Shaving on wet or dry skin, which is best for me?

Using a dry shaver is usually best for regular skin, whereas wet shaving is preferable for people who have more sensitive skin.

When dry shaving, the blade doesn’t touch the surface of the skin. This can help to reduce irritation. The razor blade gives you a closer shave when wet shaving as the edge is touching the surface.

How Does Hair Grow?

Having the correct shaver is the most crucial factor in avoiding rashes, dryness, and discomfort caused. Therefore you need to know and understand the hair growth process and find the best ladies shaver you can rely on.

All hair grows out of pockets in your skin, also known as follicles. The part of your hair you can see is made up of dead keratin cells. Whilst, the hair growth occurs below the surface of the skin.

Blood vessels surrounding the follicles feed the root of the hair. As your hair grows longer, it pushes through the surface of your skin.

How often should you shave to get rid of unwanted hair?

There is no set schedule on how often you should be shaving, whether every day or occasionally. How you’re shaving is more important than how often you shave. Also, genetics plays a significant part in your hair growth and how often you’ll need to do it. Overall, we recommend shaving every three to four days if you want it smooth.

How fast your hair grows also varies on the area of the body. For example, armpit hairs often grow 50% quicker than other parts of your body, meaning you may need to remove hair from your underarms more often if you want to retain a clean feel.

When shouldn’t I shave?

If the part of your skin you would like to shave have an open wound, sore or skin rush, consider leaving a few more days before shaving until your skin has fully healed. This is because your skin has a tendency to be more vulnerable when it’s damaged, and any shaving or any irritation in the area can cause severe discomfort.

Tips for shaving safely

Whether it’s your first time shaving or you fancy smooth skin, we’ve put together some shaving guide steps for a better and safer experience.

Step 1. Hydrate your skin

It is essential to soak the area you plan to shave for at least 3 minutes; this can be done by having a warm shower or bath.

This is because when your skin is hydrated, your body hair tends to become thicker than usual with water, resulting in it easily break away from the skin, leaving no skin irritation.

Step 2. If needed, exfoliate before shaving

Exfoliate if you want a long-lasting shave. This is because it helps to remove all the dead skin and helps your razor glide effortlessly on your skin. It’s advised to exfoliate your skin before shaving compared to after. This is because you can trigger further irritation on your skin.

Step 3. To avoid irritation, use plenty of shaving gel.

Once you have hydrated your skin, apply an evenly thick layer of shaving gel on the area you plan to shave. Using shaving gel properly will help prevent moisture loss and add a layer of protection to avoid scratches and cuts from the razor.

In addition, shaving cream acts as a guide to show you the area you have already done. This helps to avoid missed patches, reducing the chances of a skin-irritating.

Step 4. Choose the right razor

When using a disposable or reusable razor, ensure that the blade is sharp and clean, as this will minimize the feeling of it pulling onto your hair.

If you start feeling discomfort while using your razor, it’s advised to disregard them, as most razor blades only last between 5 and 10 shaves.

Once done, make sure to carefully rinsed or clean your razor thoroughly, let it air dry naturally and store it in a dry safe place in your bathroom.

Step 5. How to shave the right way?

The first shave strokes should go the same direction where your hair grows (this is where it naturally lies flat against your skin). This will help avoid any ingrown hairs from appearing and saving you a lot of pain anf stops the irritation to your epidermis. Not happy with the results? Go again in the opposite direction your hair grows from.

Learn more about how to shave:

Legs

Before shaving your legs, make sure you exfoliate the area.

Then you can start evenly applying the shaving cream to the place you want to shave. Shave lightly starting from the ankles and upwards.

Underarms:

Your armpits are one of the most sensitive parts of the skin on your body, so you must be conscious when shaving this part of your body. Soak them in a warm shower and wash the skin thoroughly. You’ll want to shave in the same direction that your hair grows from.

Facial hair:

When shaving unwanted hair from your face, you should wash your face with warm water before applying anything. Shave your face gently and in the direction of your hair growths. Be extra careful of your jawline and neck, as these areas are more prone to nicks and cuts.

Bikini area:

When shaving your bikini line, you should be extra careful, as the skin around your genitals is more sensitive than others.

Before shaving this area, you should spend at least 5 minutes in warm water to soften the hair, allowing it to be easily shaved. Shave in the direction of the hair growth first; then, you can go against the grain for smooth skin.

Traditional manual razor VS electric shavers

Electric Razors

An electric razor is a powered device by electricity.

They come with a cord or without a cord, and if they are cordless, they often are battery operated.

Electric shavers are portable and often comes with different attachments options or an additional feature such as bikini trimmer attachments, trimming comb etc.

However, if you use a cordless electric shaver and run out of battery, you will need to wait until; it’s fully charged before using it again or replacing the battery.

Electric razors tend to require more passes to cut the hair since the blades are not as exposed, which mean you will not be able to get a close shave, and you may need to shave regularly to maintain smoothness.

Not only that, since electric razor tends to be larger, they are less portable and more costly than manual.

Manual Razors

One of the advantages of using a manual razor is that it is the fastest way to shave. They are also cost-effective and can be refillable or disposable.

Manual razors cut the hair extremely close to the skin as you glide the blade directly over your body, giving the perfect close shave and smooth finish.

One of the downsides of using a manual razor is that it has a high chance of causing skin irritation and getting cut or scratched when shaving in comparison to an electric razor.
